How does technology change
the way we tell stories?
Part 1: Listening + Perception
How do you tell a story through sound?
Sound is a physical/psychoacoustic phenomenon.
Audio Art is interdisciplinary and takes hybrid forms.
In this class, we discussed the importance of storytelling in every project. We then explored various methods and mediums of storytelling and how it has evolved from the stone age to the digital age.
The first medium we studied was sound. We collectively experienced various examples of how sounds help us paint a picture without seeing anything. This exercise also helped us realize how we associate certain sounds with specific emotions, feelings, situations, and settings. Lastly, we listened to (and viewed) various unique audio art installations. Some were mechanical and industrial, while others were natural and musical. Some represented vital social issues, while others the mundane routine of life.
Week 1: Class Activity
In a team of four, we collected various sounds from our surroundings. We interpreted each sound based on our individually unique experiences. Before the activity, we learned to use a Zoom Recorder for the first time. Each of us took turns recording different sounds from the list. By the end of the activity, all of us at least had the basics down (and learned through trial and error to maintain the sound level between -12 dB and -6 dB). Following are the sounds we recorded:
A ticking sound
A humming sound
An airy sound
Sound of heat
Sound of betrayal
A round sound
Sound of loneliness
A red sound
A joyous sound
