Introduction to Computational Media - Week 1

How does computation apply to my interests?

I have a background in computer engineering, and my passion lies in digital art and design. With this class and ITP on a larger scale, I wish to bridge the two and design digital experiences which are engaging, immersive, and universally accessible.

As discussed during the first week of class, art is usually described using creative, expressive, and freeing adjectives, whereas computation is associated with words like structure, procedure, and repetition. While the latter might seem tedious, computation is what makes it possible to use the digital world as a medium to create art. It also pushes the boundaries of how art can be perceived and experienced. Computation can be applied in digital art using simple forms like digital illustration and painting and even more complex ones like augmented art, virtual art, and AI-generated art.

Another fun thing we learned during the first class is how most art (physical or performative) is the process and the end product itself. On the other hand, computational code is never the end product. So, even though computation might seem purely logical and arithmetic, it can be applied to create experiences that are emotional, magical, and wonderous.

p5 Self-Portrait

The picture on the left is my first fully realized p5 sketch. I wanted to try using various shapes and functions instead of just circles to create the self-portrait. I started by drawing the face using rectangles (with sharp as well as rounded edges), a quad for the lower half, a triangle for the nose, a curve for the mouth, and ellipses for the other features. I used a combination of ellipses and rectangles to create a cylindrical form for the neck. The body was created using a big central rectangle and two ellipses. And the rabbits are created using ellipses. I created the left one first, and then copied it and changed the coordinates and colors to create the right one. As I am used to software like Photoshop and Illustrator that mostly use drag and drop functionalities, it was a little frustrating to not be able to do that in this editor. It took me a long time to figure out how to draw a simple curve and I'm still not confident that I can draw more curves properly. Overall, my experience with the editor wasn't too bad. Most functions are easy to use, but when more than 2 coordinates come into play it can be a bit confusing.
